That’s right, another delay in favor of 3-D. Seems it’s the latest craze in Hollywood. I agree with what the writer said at the end of the article though, it does seem quite amusing of what it will be up against.

Sony Screen Gems has opted to push back the adaptation of Hyung Min-Woo’s “Priest.”

According to Superhero Hype, the new release date for “Priest” will be on May 13, 2011. “Priest” was originally going to be released this year on August 27, but was subsequently pushed back to January 2011 when it was decided that the film will be converted into 3-D.

Based on Min-Woo’s original manga series, “Priest” stars Paul Bettany as a renegade warrior priest who defies the church and teams up with a young sheriff (Cam Gigandet) and a priestess (Maggie Q) to save his kidnapped niece from a group of dangerous vampires. Karl Urban, Lily Collins, Steven Moyer, Brad Dourif and Christopher Plummer round out the cast.

“Priest” is directed by Scott Stewart (“Legion”), a former ILM staffer who replaced Andrew Douglas on the project.

Earlier this year, Stewart spoke with MTV News about how Min-Woo worked closely with him on the adaptation, even though the movie departs from the original story of the manga.

“People will see we’ve worked with Min-Woo because we love his book and he came out over this summer,” explained Stewart. “The TokyoPop gang brought him out from Korea and walked him through the art department, and we talked about the story a lot, and he talked about he wanted to continue his storyline and how essentially it could evolve [into] the storyline of the movie.”

Stewart also mentioned his desire to see “Priest” released during the summer movie season.

“We finished the movie and the studio was really excited about it and they want it to be a summer movie,” said Stewart. “Now we’re back in summer and really happy about it and working hard to make sure it all gets done before June.”

It’s interesting to note that the only other movie currently scheduled to open against “Priest” on May 13, 2011 is “Bridesmaid,” a comedy from Universal. In theory, that gives “Priest” a better shot at taking the opening weekend box office.
